Kapamilya star Jessy Mendiola shares that she wants to experience going out of her comfort zone in her career. And that’s what she got and more while filming Salvage. Sherad Anthony Sanchez’s film is Cinema One Original’s entry to the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino. She plays Melay, a news producer who will cover a series of killings in Mindanao. She stars in this movie with actor JC de Vera, Joel Saracho, Barbie Capacio, and Karl Medina. Jessy was new to the action scenes needed for her role.
Jessy was used to dramatic roles so the physical scenes were challenging for her. Jessy admits that it was the toughest part of the movie. It wasn’t as if she needed to have a showdown with somebody. It was more of hair pulling, running, and such. The actress said: “Ako lahat yun. I had no double. Di ba sa probinsiya uso yung kapag nagsisiga parang may pugon, para siyang may butas sa ilalim. Pumasok ako dun. I did that. Dala-dala namin yung camera.”
Director Sherad Sanchez even admitted that Jessy got serious injuries while filming. But he was thankful for Jessy and all the other actors’ perseverance to finish the film. Director said: “Hindi ko makakalimutan when Jessy was injured. She had a third-degree burn. But hours after, she was willing to run, to be put on a harness, rumampa, tumakbo, tumalon. It’s encouraging for me as a director, at the same time, nakaka-guilty kasi yung artista mo nahihirapan pero game na game.”
He commended Jessy Mendiola and JC de Vera for being very “good collaborators.” They were committed to doing what was expected of them as actors. Even with such an experimental process of creating the film, Jessy and JC were game to do anything.
The actress talks about the spontaneous directing of Sherad. They didn’t even have to memorize the script because new things always happened. Things like explosions were also a surprise at times so what you get are genuine reactions. "Yung ibang elements sa eksena, planted lang. Hindi namin alam. Ganun ka-totoo yung emotions, yung fear, yung kaba, yung weirdness.”
