Arguably, one of the the most disturbing of all the maritime phenomena and legends is the shocking case of the SS Ourang Medan. Over time there had been widely circulated reports about the occurrence on June of 1947, where ships were traversing the routes of the straits of Malacca, which is located between the sun drenched shores of Sumatra and Malaysia, where allegedly they claimed to have picked up a series of SOS distress signals.
The unknown ship’s message was disturbing entirely disturbing saying that all of the officers of the unknown ship including captain are dead, lying in chartroom, bridge and possibly the whole crew was dead as well. Then it was followed by a burst of vague Morse code with a final and grim message saying, "I die".
A then American merchant ship called the Silver Star was closest to the presumed location of the said Ourang Medan, where within just a few hours, the Silver Star caught sight of the Ourang Medan rising and falling in the choppy waters of the Malacca Strait. The moment that the search party boarded the terrifying ship, it was obvious that the messages were horribly accurate. Indeed the decks of the Ourang Medan were littered with the corpses of the Dutch crew.
The Captain of the Silver Star decided that they should being the ship back home and tie their ship to the Ourang Medan so they can tow it back to port, but as soon as the crew attached the tow line to the Dutch ship they noticed threatening waves of smoke pouring up from the lower decks which came up from nowhere and was absolutely horrifying.
The boarding party who was supposed to tie on to the ship, scarcely had a chance to cut the towline and make it back to the Silver Star before the Ourang Medan exploded and vanished into the sea. Until today, no one knows of what really happened to the mysterious and awfully strange Ourang Medan which is now believed to be a ghost ship that is haunting the seas.
