Rita Gaviola rose to fame after she became viral on Facebook, where she was dubbed as the "Badjao Girl". Her photo during the Pahiyas Festival in Quezon province which was taken by photographer, Topher Quinto Burgos and as soon as he posted the picture, it went viral on social media and made Rita famous over night. At the time that she was photographed, she was actually begging along the streets with her 2-year-old sister.
When her photos first trended online, she admitted that she was troubled by the the attention she was getting from total strangers whom she does not know of. She thought that with all the attention, their is a probability that the police might take it away from her because she was begging for money.
Not long after that, little dis she know that through that viral photo of her, will be the start of the changes in her life. Netizens were totally mesmerized by her stunning features like her beautiful tan skin, sharp jawline and pointed cheekbones. For someone who has ethnic beauty, she clearly qualifies as a model with her good looks and slim figure.
However her family actually used to eat only once a day, which usually consists of only boiled cassava with fish that her father catches from the sea. According to her mother, they treat rice and viand as of they were luxuries to them. Their family have been struggling ever since they left their hometown, Zamboanga City to look for a better livelihood in Luzon.
But because of her social media fame, not only did it help Rita's family, but it opened a a venture where people helped to raise awareness of the current situation and welfare of Badjaos. Since her photos scattered all over the internet, Rita got offered assistance from famous personalities like Miss World Philippines 2015 Hillarie Danielle Parungao, Miss International Philippines 2014 Bianca Guidotti, and Miss Earth 2015 Angelia Ong, which truly helped her family a lot.
Rita's exposure also opened doors for her in showbiz, where she became a housemate of the recent season of “Pinoy Big Brother” and after being evicted from the contest, many of her fans are asking where she is now. Well according to sources, Rita received a scholarship grant and is now pursuing her dreams of becoming a teacher. It is currently what she is fond of doing right now and she explained that she likes to teach children because she wants to help them. She wants to make children feel that there is someone like her that they can depend on.
